Design Capital 2012

My mother and I arrived in Helsinki at the end of September – exactly a week after the Design Week that served as the closing event of Helsinki’s status as the World Design Capital 2012. Luckily for us, the city was still buzzing with remnants of the Design Week. Art museums and stores offered the best of Scandinavian design. I created a substantial wish list (which, unfortunately, remains a fantasy, as the items in the stores are really too expensive to purchase).

Here are some of the sights we enjoyed.

The Design Museum

Marimekko – the Finnish design company renowned for its original prints and colours since 1951.

Interesting shop display – Cutlery and crockery arranged to resemble Helsinki buildings.
